Somalia: Opposition Rejects Federal Mandate Extension Amid Rising Tensions

The Council for Somalia’s Future has issued a press statement expressing firm opposition to any attempt to extend the mandates of Somalia’s federal institutions, particularly the Federal Parliament and the Presidency, warning that such a move would contravene the country’s 2012 Provisional Constitution.

In the statement, the council noted that under the provisions of the constitution, the term of the Federal Parliament is scheduled to end on 14 April 2026, while the mandate of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia will expire on 15 May 2026. The council emphasized that adherence to constitutional timelines and the organization of elections within the legally prescribed period are essential for safeguarding the country’s political stability.

The Council for Somalia’s Future further stressed that respect for constitutional order remains a fundamental requirement for sustaining democratic governance and public trust in state institutions.

The council also cautioned the leadership of the Federal Government against undertaking any measures that could result in a term extension or provoke a political dispute that may jeopardize national security and stability. It urged federal authorities to prioritize constitutional compliance and ensure that the electoral process proceeds in a transparent and timely manner.
