The UK’s ambassador to Somalia, Mike recently faced backlash after making comments that seemed to distinguish between Somaliland and Somalia as separate entities. These remarks sparked significant dispute within the Somali government, which viewed them as an affront to the country’s territorial integrity. In response to the criticism, the ambassador issued a statement to clarify his position and intentions.
UK Ambassador explained that his comments were not intended to imply that Somaliland and Somalia are separate countries. Instead, he was merely acknowledging the commendable work of a non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in the region. He emphasized that his words should not be interpreted as a shift in the UK’s long-standing policy, which continues to recognize and respect Somalia’s territorial unity.
Despite this clarification, the Somali government expressed deep concern over the ambassador’s remarks. Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi condemned the reclassification of Somaliland and Somalia under separate names, describing it as an unacceptable and deliberate attack on Somalia’s sovereignty and unity. The minister’s strong response highlighted the sensitivity of the issue and the importance of maintaining Somalia’s territorial integrity.
