Mogadishu – Somalia’s Federal Parliament today officially opened its 7th session, presided over by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, at a time when the country faces heightened political tensions and pressing governance challenges.
The session, delayed multiple times due to disputes between the government and opposition, comes amid fears that political discord could overshadow proceedings. Opposition lawmakers have expressed frustration with the government’s handling of national politics, raising concerns of protests and disruptions.
In his constitutionally mandated address, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized that the majority of the national budget has been directed towards liberating the country from terrorist groups. He described extremist militants as having turned the capital into a “stage for a false religious drama” built on bombings and bloodshed.
The President underscored improvements in Mogadishu’s security, contrasting the current stability with the fragile situation of past years. He credited security agencies for their role in securing the city and noted that militant leaders are now being targeted in remote areas, significantly weakening their influence.
Hassan Sheikh also outlined government priorities for Parliament during this session, including continuing the fight against terrorism, advancing financial reforms, and strengthening international relations. Parliament is expected to focus on urgent motions and legislation that directly impact citizens.
