Somali Government Launches Operations Targeting Armed Political Networks in Middle Shabelle

MOGADISHU— The Federal Government of Somalia has launched a series of planned security operations targeting weapons stockpiles, military vehicles, and logistical supplies allegedly linked to politicians and business figures from Mogadishu that were transferred to parts of Middle Shabelle and the Banadir region, according to security and political sources.

Overnight, clashes were reported in the districts of Cadale, Warsheekh, and the Gubadley area between government forces deployed from Mogadishu and armed fighters said to have been mobilized along clan lines.

The most intense operation reportedly targeted five technicals belonging to a former minister and prominent businessman whose hotel in Mogadishu was raided on Friday. Sources said some of the vehicles later moved toward Cadale district, the official’s clan stronghold.

The developments come amid growing political tensions surrounding the federal government’s push to implement its electoral roadmap and a controversial one-year extension enabled by recent constitutional amendments.

According to political observers and opposition figures, Villa Somalia is seeking to centralize control over weapons held by rival political actors and affiliated groups as part of broader efforts to consolidate authority ahead of the proposed electoral process.

Opposition members have criticized the operations, accusing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration of escalating tensions and risking further instability. They argue that the ongoing disarmament measures are politically driven rather than part of a neutral national security strategy.

The federal government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reported operations or the clashes.
