BADHAADHE, Somalia – General Khalid Abdullahi Omar, commander of the Somali National Army’s ground forces, made a pivotal visit to the strategic town of Raskambooni, sparking heightened tensions between Somalia’s federal government and Jubaland.
The visit, seen as a federal push to assert control, involved discussions on troop morale and loyalty, drawing mixed reactions from local forces and residents. Jubaland leadership, led by President Ahmed Madobe, views the move as a challenge to its autonomy amid ongoing disputes over military and resource control.
Reports indicate Jubaland forces are on high alert, with reinforcements positioned around Raskambooni. Analysts warn that further escalation could undermine Somalia’s stability and provide openings for extremist group Al-Shabaab to exploit the discord.
International mediators and regional neighbors are urging dialogue, emphasizing the need to prevent the political standoff from spiraling into armed conflict in the already fragile region.
