Mogadishu— United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, carried out an airstrike on September 12 targeting Al-Shabaab militants.
The strike occurred near the town of Ceel Dheer, about 288 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. AFRICOM did not confirm the number of fighters killed or injured.
In a statement, the command said U.S. forces, working alongside the Somali National Army, remain committed to operations aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab’s capacity to launch attacks. The mission, AFRICOM noted, is part of ongoing efforts to protect the United States, its forces, and citizens abroad.
Details on the units involved and the assets deployed were not released, with AFRICOM citing the need to safeguard operational security.
The strike comes as Somalia continues its wider offensive against Al-Shabaab, a group linked to al-Qaeda that has carried out frequent attacks across the country for more than a decade.
