MOGADISHU – In recent days, Somalia’s capital has become the epicenter of growing controversy following a series of meetings convened by members of the National Salvation Forum who have strongly condemned the Federal Government’s demolition campaign targeting buildings constructed on public land.

The opposition bloc argues that the ongoing evictions directly affect ordinary citizens who have not been provided with adequate alternatives, compensation, or resettlement plans. The move has triggered a wide-ranging debate — political, social, and legal — across Mogadishu’s public and media spheres.

However, not all voices have sided with the Forum. Sheikh Osman Barre, former Speaker of the Hirshabelle Parliament, delivered sharp criticism of the opposition group during an interview with Radio Shabelle. He dismissed their stance as “political outcry far removed from reality,” arguing that the Forum lacks legitimate authority and appears to be fuelling unnecessary political tension.

“These are people who do not understand where they are heading. The Constitution cannot be ignored simply because groups gather and call themselves opposition. The government has a duty to protect public interests,” said Sheikh Osman.

The debate over Mogadishu’s forced evictions comes amid broader national challenges — including constitutional review, the preparation for upcoming elections, and ongoing disputes over public asset management.

Opposition politicians and their supporters maintain that the government’s demolition campaign violates citizens’ rights, while government-aligned figures argue that the operations are part of efforts to strengthen state authority and safeguard public property.
