The Somali government has renamed the historic Gen. Gordon military camp in Mogadishu in honor of the late Emirati officer, Col. Mohammed Mubarak Al Mansoori. The decision, announced by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud through a formal decree, recognizes Col. Al Mansoori and UAE soldiers who lost their lives in a terrorist attack at the camp.
This gesture aims to honor the sacrifices of Somalia’s international allies who have supported the country during critical moments of need.
The renaming follows growing diplomatic ties between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates, which has been a key partner in supporting Somalia’s development and security. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of international allies who have risked their lives for Somalia’s stability. However, the decision has sparked conversations among Somalis about the need to balance such gestures with efforts to preserve the legacy of their own national heroes.
For many Somalis, Gen. Gordon camp is more than just a military installation—it is a symbol of the bravery and resilience of the nation’s armed forces, representing generations of soldiers who fought for Somalia’s sovereignty.
“It’s important to recognize our international friends, but we cannot forget the sacrifices of Somali heroes who built and protected this country,” a Mogadishu resident shared. This renaming has led to broader reflections on how to honor foreign allies while safeguarding Somalia’s own history and identity.
