Mogadishu — Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reaffirmed that the Federal Government of Somalia will take all necessary measures to protect the country’s unity, sovereignty, and independence.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera Television, the President addressed reports concerning Israel’s alleged interest in establishing a military base in Somalia. He stressed that any such move would raise serious security concerns for the region.
“A military base is not a tourist facility. It is a site where armed forces are stationed for defence and military operations. The fundamental question is: why would Israel seek to establish a base in Somalia, and against whom would such a base be used?” President Hassan Sheikh said, noting that the implications would extend beyond Somalia to neighbouring countries.
The President also responded to speculation regarding the presence of Israeli military personnel inside Somalia. He categorically denied such claims, stating that no Israeli soldiers are currently in the country. “There are no Israeli troops in Somalia, and they will not be allowed to enter. Should such a situation arise, the government will take all necessary steps to defend the sovereignty of the Somali state,” he added.
President Hassan Sheikh’s remarks come amid heightened diplomatic tensions following claims by Israel that it has recognized the administration of Somalia’s north-western regions. The Federal Government of Somalia, together with international partners, has strongly condemned these claims, reiterating that Somalia’s territorial integrity and political unity are non-negotiable under international law.
