Several countries have launched evacuation efforts to extract their citizens from Lebanon amid heavy bombardments targeting Hezbollah strongholds. The capital, Beirut, is witnessing continuous flights as Israel intensifies airstrikes on parts of the city, escalating the need for immediate evacuations.
At least 23 countries are currently coordinating efforts to remove their nationals from the conflict zone, according to Reuters. The United Kingdom has successfully completed three evacuation flights, with a fourth scheduled to depart on Sunday. South Korea also evacuated 97 of its citizens on Saturday via a military aircraft.
The United States and European Union member states have initiated large-scale evacuations, opening assistance lines and organizing emergency flights. The urgency of these operations underscores the deteriorating situation, with governments prioritizing the safety of their citizens.
Somali nationals in Lebanon, many of them students, face increasing challenges as the crisis deepens. The Somali government has been urged to activate its embassy in Syria, which oversees Lebanese affairs, to arrange evacuation plans. In collaboration with neighboring African countries and Turkey, Somalia could secure seats on emergency flights for those unable to afford the rising cost of tickets.
