HARGEISA, Somalia — Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Silanyo, the former President of Somaliland, has passed away at the age of 86, according to an announcement from Somaliland TV. Silanyo, who led the self-declared republic from 2010 to 2017, died on Friday in Hargeisa.
Silanyo was elected through a popular vote in 2010 and assumed office for an initial five-year term. His administration was extended by two years due to electoral delays, culminating in a peaceful transfer of power to his successor, Muse Bihi Abdi, in November 2017. This transition marked an important moment for Somaliland, showcasing its commitment to stability and democratic practices.
Throughout his presidency, Silanyo was widely recognized for his dedication to fostering stability and development within Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has yet to gain international recognition. His tenure was marked by significant improvements in infrastructure and initiatives aimed at maintaining peace and cooperation with neighboring regions.
Flags across Somaliland will be flown at half-mast in honor of the late president, and a state funeral is being planned to pay tribute to his contributions. Current President Muse Bihi Abdi issued a statement expressing condolences and acknowledging Silanyo’s enduring legacy, emphasizing his tireless work for the progress and unity of Somaliland.
