Somalia and Ethiopia Leaders to Meet to Address Regional Tensions

Arusha, Tanzania – Kenyan President William Ruto has announced plans for a meeting between the leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda to help ease tensions in the Horn of Africa. Speaking on November 30, 2024, at the 24th East African Community (EAC) Summit in Arusha, where he took over as chair of the regional bloc, Ruto shared the proposal but did not set a specific date.

The meeting could mark a significant step, bringing Ethiopian and Somali leaders together for the first time since a contentious agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland was signed in January 2024. The deal has strained relations, with Somali officials insisting they won’t engage directly with Ethiopia unless the agreement is repealed.

This initiative comes at a critical time for the Horn of Africa, where political tensions and security challenges remain high. By fostering dialogue, the leaders aim to address key issues affecting the region’s stability.

Beyond resolving disputes, the meeting is part of a larger effort to strengthen regional ties, tackle terrorism, manage cross-border conflicts, and explore opportunities for trade, development, and lasting peace.
